What are coonhounds used for today?
Coonhounds are extremely versatile dogs.
Like their ancestors, the modern-day Coonhounds are still used widely
to track/hunt bear, cougar, bobcat, fox, boars, raccoons, opossums,
deer,
and some individuals swear by them as bird dogs. Coonhound field trial
events and nite hunts have been popular for decades and they're becoming
increasingly popular throughout the country. Thousands of dollars are
won by successful houndsmen and hounds women every year in PKC, UKC and
other jackpot type hunts across the United States. . If you're interested
in finding an event near your "neck-of-the-woods" Check out
our links page for upcoming events with UKC and PKC in your area.
Another major role of these wonderful dogs, of course, is as the family
pet. They are becoming increasingly popular in families across the country.
They are very well mannered dogs with a great temperament. They do not
however get along with the family cat unless raised with it from a puppy
and continually taught that the family cat is not for chewing, tearing,
pulling or any other puppy pleasures.
Coonhounds are tremendously adaptable
to just about any environment you place them in, but of course, there
are drawbacks that go along with
all the good things in life. If you decide that you want a coonhound
for a pet, please, read up on the breed of dog you are looking to get.
Coonhounds of any breed need plenty of room to run and they also need
tolerant neighbors as they are not quiet dogs!!! These dogs open up and
bay at just about anything at just about any time of day.
